Its a good idea to have a portable waste tank if your dry camping with out a sewer hookup for long periods of time. Not messy at all, get a large one so you can empty your grey water too, get one with wheels, like a suitcase with wheel and handle. Extra latex gloves, and we have no mess at all, its just humbling a bit walking to the dump staion with your waste water in tow..LoL

What is your experience using a portable waste tank such as a thetford smarttote. Is it messy when you empty the holding tank into the smarttote? What other problems did you encounter?
